Investigation of EDTA concentration on the size of carbonated flowerlike hydroxyapatite microspheres

Abstract: Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) is considered an effective crystal growth modifier for template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HA) materials. In this work, flowerlike-carbonated HA (CHA) microspheres were synthesized using EDTA via a one-step hydrothermal route. The phase, functional groups, morphology and particle size distribution of the products were examined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy as well as lase… Show more

“…Qi et al synthesized HA microspheres by Na2EDTA in a hydrothermal way, with the microsphere diameter around 10 μm [16]. The concentration of Na2EDTA is significant to regulate the final morphology and high pH values contribute to the of HA microspheres [17,18]. Also in our former study, EDTA is utilized to fabricate HA microspheres in hydrothermal homogeneous precipitation method.…”

“…Furthermore, EA used in the MPN synthesis can chelate the free Ca 2+ cations in SBF, leading to the directional growth of the CHA plates and the particular flower-like structure of HA. 42,43 The nature of crystals grown on the surface of the Meso-SiHAp@MPN pellet was investigated using EDS compared to before soaking in SBF. As shown in Figure 3E,H, KB, due to the EDS results, the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio changes from 1.48 to 2.1 from days 7 to 21 soaking in SBF, which indicates an amorphous calcium phosphate structure.…”
