Investigation of enhanced hemocompatibility and tissue compatibility associated with multi-functional coating based on hyaluronic acid and Type IV collagen

Abstract: The biocompatibility of cardiovascular devices has always been considered crucial for their clinical efficacy. Therefore, a biofunctional coating composed of Type IV collagen (CoIV) and hyaluronan (HA) was previously fabricated onto the titanium (Ti) substrate for the application of promoting vascular smooth muscle cell contractile phenotype and improving surface endothelialization. However, the anti-inflammation property, blood compatibility and in vivo tissue compatibility of the HA/CoIV coating, as paramoun… Show more

“…It is known that platelet morphology is related to its activation state [22]. To examine the activity of platelets adhered to the surfaces after various coatings, the adhesion and morphology of the adhered platelets were characterized by SEM.…”

“…The hemolytic rate of GCC was the lowest among the coatings of 316L SS, DAC and GDC. After the implantation, the stent interacts with blood cells, including platelets [22]. The poor blood compatibility of coating may lead to not only hemolysis but also the formation of thrombosis [39, 40].…”

“…While these results are encouraging, none of these coatings are inherently anti-thrombogenic. In fact, hemo-compatibility of collagen IV and fibronectin has been examined by other groups, and both were found to activate platelets in the absence of anti-platelet therapies such as hyaluronic acid or heparin [12,13]. …”

“…For pro-endothelial drugs or factors, there are many choices, such as fibronectin [ 20 ], laminin [ 21 ], collagen [ 22 ], peptides [ 23 ] and specific antibodies [ 24 ], but most of these drugs or proteins are hydrosoluble, which may lead to initial burst release after loading and implantation, but which is not a favorable durative pro-endothelial property. Estradiol is the most active estrogen that can be secreted by both men and women [ 25 ].…”
