“…Previous studies about the interaction of NO 2 and SO 2 in solution proposed that the initial step involves the formation of an addition complex [SO 3 –NO 2 ] . This species could further undergo a subsequent reaction with NO 2 to produce a long lived intermediate [NO 2 –SO 3 –NO 2 ].…”

“…The oxidation of NO to NO 2 is also a key step both in the NOx reduction technologies and the nitric acid production. For example, the NH 3 -SCR reaction rate can be greatly enhanced if a fraction of NO is converted to NO 2 , and the increase of the NO 2 content greatly improves the efficiency of the reduction catalysts and also decreases aging of the catalysts. , Supported catalysts (included noble metals and metal oxides) are widely used in the catalytic oxidation of NO. However, these oxidation reactions are always conducted at high NO concentrations (up to hundreds ppm) and high temperature (about 423–723 K). In contrast, it was found that when the NO concentration was low to the ppb level, the heterogeneous reaction of NO on atmospheric particles was slow and supposed to hardly happen. , Therefore, the heterogeneous conversion of NO to NO 2 in the atmospheric chemistry has always been neglected.…”

“…It is noted that the formation of nitrate species was promoted significantly by SO 2 on all mineral oxides. One possible reason can be the reoxidation of the produced nitrite in eq . , Especially with the aid of O 2 , the NO resulting from the eqs and would combine with nitrite species to form nitrate species, as shown below, …”

“…In particular, weakly adsorbed NO were also observed at 1684 cm −1 . 6 NO was supposed to adsorb on the sites of positive charged alumina ions, 74 and then was catalytically oxidized to various nitrates and nitrites, 75 indicating that the pure γ-Al 2 O 3 promoted the NO adsorption on the catalyst surface followed by the formation of nitrates. At times, it could be found that the lineshape of pure γ-Al 2 O 3 were similar to that of Mn/γ-Al 2 O 3 in Fig.…”
