Investigation of temperature and barometric pressure variation effects on radon concentration in the Sopronbánfalva Geodynamic Observatory, Hungary

Abstract: Radon concentration variation has been monitored since 2009 in the artificial gallery of the Sopronbánfalva Geodynamic Observatory, Hungary. In the observatory, the radon concentration is extremely high, 100 -600 kBq m-3 in summer and some kBq m-3 in winter. The relationships between radon concentration, temperature and barometric pressure were separately investigated in the summer and winter months by Fast Fourier Transform, Principal Component Analysis, Multivariable Regression and Partial Least Square analy… Show more

“…La medición de la concentración de radón es una tarea compleja, que está sujeta a múltiples variables como son el tipo de suelo y su permeabilidad, las condiciones climatológicas (lluvia, viento, presión) y los materiales de construcción de los edificios, entre otros (16). En este apartado se describe cómo se han realizado las mediciones de radón y los equipos utilizados.…”

“…The rainfall only occurred on 15 and 16 January, with 8 mm between the two days, which did not have a major effect on the ionization of the site and therefore, did not affect the presence of radon gas. The temperatures reached outside during the study fluctuated between 23 • C maximum and 1 • C minimum during the early morning of 17 January, although this fact did not affect to a great extent the interior of the shelter because it maintains an average of 16 • C in a practically uniform way since it is underground [49].…”

“…The data collection phase inside the Polvorín de la Ereta was carried out in four places of the same room, depositing two cameras in each one of them to verify that there were no deviations. This part of the study was very interesting for further verification because of the different accumulation of Radon gas in the same closed room according to the zone [8]. The results obtained are shown in Table 1.…”
