Investigation of the effect of astaxanthin on alveolar bone loss in experimental periodontitis

Abstract: Within the limits of this study, it can be suggested that astaxanthin administration may reduce alveolar bone loss by increasing osteoblastic activity and decrease osteoclastic activity in experimental periodontitis model.

“…Regarding the inflammatory cells, fibroblast cells and endothelial cells could easily be differentiated from inflammatory cells which were macrophage, neutrophil, eosinophil, T lymphocytes, and plasma cells . Fibroblasts have a thin and long spindle‐like shape, while other cells have a more rounded shape . The cells which were not easily differentiated were not counted.…”

“…For the osteoblast cells, periodontal ligament neighboring alveolar bone to observe the lining surface of the alveolar bone was evaluated. Measurements were performed at three different sites, mesial‐coronal, apical, and distal‐coronal, and a mean value was recorded …”

“…Experimental periodontitis model was induced via ligation method that is one of the most common methods for periodontitis induction . ‒ In this method, sutures around teeth cause dental plaque deposition, gingival inflammation, and alveolar bone loss which has a more rapid and acute course compared with human form of the disease . ‒ However, the advantages of the method such as similarity to humans in anatomic structure and response to therapy, cost of the experimental procedure, easy handling, and availability, make it a desired technique for periodontal disease induction .…”

“…Staining was performed to identify active osteoclasts which produce TRAP enzyme . ‒ Sections were rehydrated with ethanol and placed into 0.2‐M acetate buffer (consisting of 0.2‐M sodium acetate and sodium tartrate dibasic dehydrate) for incubation 20 minutes at room conditions. After incubation, sections were subjected to naphthol AS‐MX phosphate and fast red TR salt, which were added to the acetate buffer solution, for 45 minutes at 37°C.…”
