Investigation of the effects of heparin and low molecular weight heparin on E-cadherin and laminin expression in rat pregnancy by immunohistochemistry

Abstract: Heparin and enoxaparin can reduce E-cadherin expression but not laminin expression in rat pregnancy. They might modulate trophoblast invasion. We suggest that this is the possible underlying mechanism involving in improvement of trophoblast invasion by the use of heparin and LMWH in patients with the history of miscarriage.

“…Several studies on the effects of heparin on trophoblast invasion and modulation mechanisms and antiapoptotic decidual and placental tissues have shown benefits with the use of these medications 21,23 , which are consistent with the results of this study, in which no differences in fertility rates in Wistar rats exposed to enoxaparin and UFH in prophylactic or therapeutic doses were observed.…”

“…Heparin reduces the expression of E-cadherin and promotes trophoblast invasion and proliferation into the endometrial cells potentially improving implantation (95). A systematic review of women with recurrent implantation failure undergoing IVF demonstrated that use of adjunct low-molecular-weight heparin improved live birth rates, and the rate of miscarriage was substantially reduced compared with the control group (264).…”

“…In contrast, the trophoblast expression of E-cadherin is higher in placentas of patients with preeclampsia, than in those of normal pregnant women 27 . The effect of heparin on E-cadherin expression was studied by Erden and coworkers 28 , who randomly treated female rats with different heparins (UFH, enoxaparin, and tinzaparin) during the preconceptional period, and examined E-cadherin expression in tissue sections of placenta and decidua from the different groups. The group treated by UFH had a lower E-cadherin placental staining than other study groups.…”
