Investigation of the stent induced deformation on hemodynamic of internal carotid aneurysms by computational fluid dynamics

Abstract: Application of the stent for treatment of the internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms has been extensively increased in recent decades. In the present work, stent-induced deformations of the parent vessel of ICA aneurysms are fully investigated. This study tries to visualize blood stream and calculated hemodynamic factors inside the four ICA aneurysms after deformations of parent vessel. For the simulation of the non-Newtonian blood stream, computational fluid dynamic is applied with one-way Fluid–Solid intera… Show more

“…The pressure outlet value is set to 100 mmHg [64,65]. It is worth mentioning that other works [4,6] accounted for the pulsatile nature of blood flow inside the vessels using prescribed mass flow rate at the inlet and pressure value at the outlet.…”

“…In cases of significant aneurysm deformation, stents alone can improve hemodynamic factors, according to the study. Salavatidezfouli et al [6] examined stent deformations in ICA aneurysm treatment using CFD. Four aneurysms with different characteristics were studied for blood circulation and flow patterns.…”

“…Saccular aneurysms, with their asymmetrical bulges, often experience complex and disturbed flow patterns, leading to regions of low WSS and high OSI. These flow characteristics are associated with increased vulnerability to rupture compared to fusiform aneurysms, which tend to have more uniform flow patterns and higher WSS 17 19 .…”

“…This technique substantially decreases the blood flow into the sac and makes a framework for thrombus establishment 8 , 9 . The application of the stent is helpful for the efficient coiling of the cerebral aneurysm 10 , 11 . The usage of the polymer foam as coils results in optimistic long-standing healing based on the in vivo studies.…”
