Investigation of the way to enhance the synergistic effect between polyimide and graphene on the tribological performance of polytetrafluoroethylene composites

Abstract: In this article, two different preparation methods were employed to explore the way to maximize the synergistic effect between polyimide (PI) and graphene (Gr) on the friction and wear of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites. Results indicate that the incorporation of Gr into PI firstly is more beneficial for the improvement of tribological performance rather than the blending of Gr and PTFE firstly. The incorporation of Gr into PI firstly enhances the wear

“…From Figure 5(a), the absorption bands of imide rings are at 1720 cm −1 (C=O symmetric stretching) and 1780 cm −1 (C=O asymmetric stretching) in the spectrum of pure PI. 29 In addition, these characteristic peaks of PI can be observed from the spectrum of PI/SiO 2 , PI/Cu and PI/SiO 2 /Cu nanocomposites. All of these phenomena implies that PI was synthesized successfully.…”

“…[6,7,[16][17][18][19] However, like common polyimides, SMPIs are electrically insulated, which limits their applications. Adding functional phases to form composites can effectively expand the functionality of materials, like electrical conductivity, [20][21][22][23][24] thermal conductivity, [25][26][27][28] and electromagnetic wave absorption. [29][30][31] As representative conductive polymers, polyaniline (PANI) and its derivatives are suitable conductive modifiers because of their high electrical conductivity and stability in environments or during redox processes.…”

“…[32][33][34] Hence, in this article, SMPI-PANI composites with good electrical conductivity and shape memory properties were synthesized by in situ polycondensation, during which the interpenetrating networks formed. Compared with incorporating conductive fillers [6,[20][21][22][23] or embedding conductive networks on the surface of films, [7,24] this approach can avoid generating defects and can be used for fabricate bulky conductive structures. The thermomechanical properties, thermal stabilities, electrical conductivities, shape memory performances of SMPI-PANI composites were characterized and the possible structure of interpenetrating SMPI/PANI network was discussed.…”
