Investigation of urea–formaldehyde polymer cure by infrared

Abstract: SynopsisAn examination has been made of the capability of conventional infrared analysis to define the structure of urea-formaldehyde (UF) polymers in the cured, crosslinked state. Proton NMR and infrared measurements of model compounds and uncured UF polymers were combined with infrared observations during polymer cure. The existing interpretation of UF polymer infrared spectra was clarified and a partial confirmation of the UF polymer cure mechanism obtained. However, it was concluded that conventional infra… Show more

“…Moreover, this result was also compatible with the occurrence of the 1320 cm Ϫ1 band assigned to ACON or -CHON structure as reported. 25 The spectra of both resins from alkaline and strong-acid reaction conditions showed strong bands at 1032 and 1024 cm Ϫ1 , respectively. The band from 1030 to 1050 cm Ϫ1 could be assigned to CON stretching from CON or CON 2 , of amides in the resins.…”

“…Figure 7 shows the FTIR spectra of the cured UF0 and MUF resins. In addition, the assignments of absorption bands are tabulated in Table 4 according to the literature (Padgett and Hamner 1958;Myers 1981;Jada 1988;Socrates 1994). A distinct peak at 814 cm -1 was detected for each MUF resin, which was attributed to the stretching of the triazine ring structure of melamine.…”
