Investigation of velocity field and oil distribution in an oil–water hydrocyclone using a particle dynamics analyzer

Abstract: a b s t r a c t A non-intrusive particle dynamics analyzer (PDA) was used to investigate the distribution of velocity field and oil droplets in a 50 mm oil-water separation hydrocyclone. Axi-asymmetry distribution of the flow field was observed in the hydrocyclone, which was perhaps attributed to the use of single tangential inlet in the hydrocyclone.

“…Until recently, the hydrocyclone has been successfully and widely used in mineral industry [17], coal industry [18,19], chemical industry [20], environmental engineering [21], petroleum industry [22], pulp and paper industry [23], food industry [24], biological industry [25], agriculture [26], etc. Although the separation efficiencies, for materials with various different conditions, are significantly different, the separation performances of hydrocyclones in a number of specific industries are extremely outstanding.…”

“…The separation of oil-water two-phase dispersion is important in the process of oil production, and the use of hydrocyclones is not uncommon in the petroleum industry. To date, much progress has been made in the research on swirling flow fields inside a hydrocyclone (Zhou et al, 2010). However, due to the different structural parameters of each hydrocyclone, there are great differences in the swirling flow fields.…”

“…Suas aplicações se restringem basicamente ao tratamento de águas com quantidade residual de óleo, e que geralmente não ultrapassam o valor de 1% (p/p ou v/v). Nos trabalhos de Bai et al (2011), Zhou et al (2010, Almeida et al (2009) e Nezhati & Thew (1987 é possível confirmar a utilização de baixas concentrações de óleo.…”
