Investigation on Drying Performance and Energy Savings of the Batch-Type Heat Pump Dryer

Abstract: Simulation of the heat pump cycle and the drying process has been carried out to obtain the design parameters of the dryer. The analysis indicates that a specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) greater than 3.4 kg/kWh can be obtained. A box-type heat pump dryer has been developed and investigated for the performance of drying of shredded radish. Heat pump drying took 1.0-1.5 times longer than hot air drying. However, the heat pump dryer showed considerable improvement in energy savings. The SMER of the heat p… Show more

“…HPs have been used mainly for space heating and water heating=cooling purposes, but many studies have progressed in its industrial applications, especially in dehumidification and in drying agricultural products, which are energy-intensive processes. [37][38][39] The results of the present study show a good agreement with the literature [40,42] and highlight that HP systems are energy efficient and can be integrated to energy-intensive processes. 19.294 input to the HP dryer.…”

“…The developed experimental vacuum-atmospheric dryer includes the following units [2]: unit of vacuum drying, in which the process of vacuum dehydration from initial moisture content of the material to intermediate one is conducted; unit of atmospheric drying -for drying the material from intermediate humidity to the final one; heat pump [3][4][5] unit on the basis of a single-stage refrigeration machine designed for heating and cooling the elements of drying plant and reduce the load on a vacuum pump.…”

“…Many researchers have worked on the use of heat pump dryer to improve the drying quality [7,8]. Studies carried out on different types of heat pump dryers are as follows: heat pump dryer that uses carbon dioxide as a working fluid [9], two-stage heat pump dryer [10], solar-assisted heat pump dryer [11], convectional dryer [12], hot air thin-layer dryer [13], HP dryers [14][15][16][17][18], and PID (proportional-integral-derivation)-controlled solar heat pump dryer [19].…”
