Investigation the effect of sox emission reduction on transit ships emissions as of January 1, 2020

Abstract: The Istanbul Strait is one of the choke points in the international maritime trade. 44868 ships have passed through the Istanbul Strait in the last two years. These merchant ships are emitting exhaust gas emissions such as CO2, NOx, SOx inten?sively. These pollutants also affect human health and the environment. There is a consensus among scientists that ambient concentrations of particulate matter and SOx have negative health impacts, including asthma, heart attacks, hospital admissions, and… Show more

“…Pollution to the marine environment caused by cruise ships can be classified as graywater, sewage, bilge water, garbage or solid wastes, toxic wastes, and hazardous gases such as SOx, NOx, and black carbon generated by main engine or power needed for hotel functions (Copeland, 2008;Tokuşlu et al,2020;Mersin et al, 2019Mersin et al, -2020. Despite the number of cruise ships represents a small portion of the global ship fleet, some types of wastes may have a greater impact due to the nature of them.…”

“…Before all artificial channel projects are created, energy efficiency, environmental pollution, and opportunities for safe navigation are among the main concerns of parties to marine transportation (Bayırhan, 2020). These emissions from ships adversely affect human health, comfort, and the environment (Tokuşlu, Bayirhan, and Gazioglu, 2020; Ülker et al ., 2020). The studies on the Panama Canal after the new enlargement are among the leading developments in this regard: The most significant impact of the change is a significant reduction in GHG emissions as a result of increased ship size that can use the canal.…”

“…These estimations are the most important studies conducted for the Black Sea and other regions so far. The amount of ship emissions in the region does not change with the fact that the Black Sea is an inland sea and there is not muchchanged ship movement in the region (Cofala et al (2007), IIASA (2007, Tokuslu et al (2020), Tokuslu and Burak (2021).…”
