“…This aspect was addressed by the researchers Hackl (2018), Bacher (2020), Bayuo et al (2020) and Saiti and Chletsos (2020) who identified effective language training in the local language as a means of ensuring refugees participate effectively in their academic activities. A second action identified by Bellandi et al (2021), Jungblut et al (2018) and Silva et al (2020b), found that partnerships between governments, universities, civil society and companies are fundamental support to refugees who, when dealing with social and legal issues, face the challenges of overcoming the local bureaucracy to obtain personal documents. Bayuo et al (2020), Bacher (2019), Anjos (2018), Chopra (2020), Silva et al (2020b) and Marcu (2018) corroborate the findings of the previous authors stating that in addition to fostering refugees with social and legal information, universities should be protagonists in basic and specialized health care, such as psychological, dental and others.…”

“…These services are essential, as many processes in Florian opolis are scheduled with an e-system, and many refugees do not have access to computers, mobile phones or the internet and/or do not speak Portuguese. Role of universities Silva et al (2020b) highlight that the social assistance sector handles the issues of access to social programs and benefits while the psychology sector provides psychological care. The authors also point out that the area of greatest demand was the "Search for a job" which alone corresponded to 36.6% of the service.…”

“…Indeed, Santa Catarina is one of Brazil’s leading destinations for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Brazil. Historically recognized as a destination for immigrants due to its industrialization standards and promising employment compared to other regions in the country, the state is one of the main recipients of the country’s new faces, mainly Haitians after the earthquake that devastated the country in 2010 and Venezuelans after the start of the humanitarian crisis in 2015 (Silva, Rocha and D’Avila, 2020). The “Asylum in Numbers 2019” report from the Ministry of Justice ranks Santa Catarina fourth in the number of refuge requests (1,894), along with Paraná (1,408) and Rio Grande do Sul (1,223).…”

“…The city registered the arrival of migrants of 62 nationalities, including 912 Haitians in 2014–2018, far higher than previous years (Silva, Borba et al, 2020). Despite the growing number of immigrants and refugees in Santa Catarina in the last decade (Silva, Rocha et al, 2020), public authorities adopted no specific policies for the reception, regularization, and integration of new migrants until 2018. Consequently, grassroots institutions joined efforts to respond to this vacuum in attending to this population (Silva, Rocha et al, 2020).…”
