Purpose Improper levels or excess of iodine may present a greater risk to health, for this reason, this paper aims to assess the iodine content present in salt and estimate the iodine concentration in school meals in a Brazilian northeast region. Design/methodology/approach Six samples of different salt brands sold in the city of Lagarto, Sergipe, Brazil were gathered for analyzing iodate concentration. The amounts of salt added to meals of four schools in the city and the weight of the provided meals were recorded during two consecutive days of gathering, thus obtaining data to estimate the iodine content of these meals. The rest of the meals and the nutritional composition of school meals were analyzed. A questionnaire for participants on the perception of salt was applied. For data analysis, α = 5% was used. Findings The iodine concentration in all salt samples followed legislation (15 to 45 mg of iodine/kg of salt), with the average of iodine ranged between 26.5 ± 1.29 and 33.9 ± 2.49 mg/kg (p < 0.001). The estimated iodine content in consumed school meals was 0.025 mg (25 µg), in meals of schools A and C, it was 0.03 ± 0.02 mg, and to schools B and D, it was 0.02 ± 0.01 mg (p < 0.001). Percentages of rest of the meals greater than 10% were found and the assessed food preparation showed low caloric and nutritional values. Originality/value The iodine content is in accordance with the salt iodization policy in Brazil, and that the average iodine estimate in school meals was considered adequate for this population.

Leadership and governance are key components of health systems, nevertheless research into leadership and governance of mental healthcare at the community level is probably the least well researched and understood part of these systems. As part of assessing the integration of mental health in Primary Health Care in Ghana, the leadership and governance organisation and structures to ensure oversight and coordination were examined. A concurrent mixed-methods design involving both quantitative and qualitative research methods approach was adopted. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire, which was either self-administered or interviewer administered, on 1010 respondents with 830 completed (response rate 82%). Key informant interviews and focus group discussions were used to collect the qualitative data. Thematic content analysis with the use of NVivo 12 was applied for the qualitative field data and Stata SE16 was used for quantitative data. Data triangulation strategy was used to report the qualitative and quantitative results. The study showed that leadership and governance of mental health at the PHC level were lowly developed due to the modest level of awareness of the Mental Health Law, inadequate functioning of mental health units and coordination, low level of private sector participation in mental health care services, and low levels of provision of monitoring, supervision, and evaluation. This affected the integration of mental health at the PHC level, which was also gauged as low. The study concludes that despite the presence of legislation and policy aiming to achieve decentralised and integrated mental health services at the PHC level, mental health care is still a low-level priority within the health care system in Ghana and tends to operate within a silo. The study recommends that more practical and concerted leadership of mental health at the regional and district levels is required to drive decentralisation and integration at these levels.

A lot of research initiatives have gone into the breeding of cassava which has led to the development and release of over 30 cassava varieties in Ghana, of which adoption rate is 40%. This low adoption is due to inadequate promotion of improved varieties and the fact that some of the varieties do not meet end-user needs. With cassava becoming an important cash crop, it is important that breeding programmes refocus to define the market segments and objectives to facilitate the improvement of target traits such as poundability, dry matter content, starch and carotenoids that will lead to the development of varieties tailored towards end-user needs. This will in the long run promote food and nutritional security especially in low- and middle-income countries where the crop is a major staple. In addition, there should be more investment in high-throughput phenotyping to enhance the assessment and evaluation for the development of varieties with end-user traits. Subsequently, the cassava seed system should be formalized to enhance the production and dissemination of high-quality improved cassava varieties with end-user traits.
