IOL power mislabelling

Abstract: Prompted by four cases of IOL power mislabelling, a method was developed which allowed the measurement of the IOL power using a keratometer. The principle of operation was to measure the curvature of the steepest surface of the IOL through a minus lens by which the size of the mires was brought into the measuring range of the keratometer. With this method the IOL power was checked in three random IOL samples from three companies. Although no large errors in IOL power labelling were encountered in these samples… Show more

“…The mislabelling of IOLs has been a problem in some cases in the past (Olsen & Olesen 1993), but it seems to have been seldom reported in recent literature. A recommended procedure would be to verify all measurements by remeasuring the corneal curvature and axial length and comparing the results with preoperative measurements.…”

“…The measurement of actual postoperative ACD together with a repeat K-reading and (optical) biometry makes it possible based on the observed refraction to back-calculate IOL power in situ within an accuracy of ± 1 D. This allows for the diagnosis of a case of IOL mislabelling with reasonable accuracy. The mislabelling of IOLs has been a problem in some cases in the past (Olsen & Olesen 1993), but it seems to have been seldom reported in recent literature. The higher accuracy of optical biometry has greatly improved measuring conditions for diagnosing mislabelled IOLs.…”

“…The method involves measuring the curvature of the steepest surface of the IOL with a minus lens, which facilitates measuring mires within the keratometer's range. 10 We were unable to verify the primary IOL power in vivo. However, the fact that we observed an improvement in postoperation refraction after using the same IOL powers with the same A constant and with the involvement of +6D indicates that the manufacturer mislabeled the IOL, which is the cause of the refractive surprise.…”
