Ion Association of Protonated Poly(vinylamine) and Poly(ethylenimine) with Poly(vinyl sulfate) and Dodecylbenzenesulfonate as Special Reference for Colloidal Titration

Abstract: Ion association constants of two types of poly(vinylamine) and poly(ethylenimine) were determined from pH measurements of the polyamine/counter ion mixtures at an aqueous solution of the polymers (5 × 10−4 equiv mol dm−3). The results are discussed in terms of chemical structure (distance between reacting groups, and straight or branched chain), molecular weight, and ionic strength. The ion association at very low concentration protonated polyamines was promoted by the close location of amino groups. When the … Show more

“…The calculation method of Ki from the data was the same that we previously reported. 18 In brief, the calculated value was obtained based on the assumption that the character of Ka to α during complexation was similar to that of Ka without PVS.…”

“…Glycolchitosan also demonstrated such a linear relationship, 16 but poly(vinylamine) and poly-(ethyleneimine) never indicated a regular relationship to α. 18 This indicates that chitosans have a rigid backbone of a sugar chain, and that the effects of α and the NaCl concentration can not produce a significant conformational change. Each constant pKa at 1 M NaCl solution is listed in Table 1.…”

“…The strong association of a weak polycation with PVSK increases the apparent dissociation constant of the weak polycation, particularly, at low ionic strength. 14,15 Therefore the colloidal titration value is used at the condition at which all of the charged groups are ionized.…”

“…As a typical case, an aqueous solution of poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium) chloride (PDADMAC) can be titrated with an aqueous solution of potassium poly(vinyl sulfate) (KPVS) of known concentration. The reaction between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes has been studied on stoichiometry, 9,13-16 the stability constant, 17,18 and the effect of the polymerization degree. 19 A few colloidal titrations were applied to measure metal ions in hydrolyzed, polymeric forms.…”
