The tremendous advancement in embedded systems, miniaturization, and wireless technology had allowed Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) to have overwhelming applications in e-healthcare, entertainment, sports/games training, etc. WBAN is a special type of wireless sensor network where bio-sensors are attached or embedded to a single human-body designed to connect various bio-sensors and applications, operate autonomously and observe different vital signs of a human body remotely. Despite its enormous benefits and applications, some of the key challenges in designing heterogeneous WBAN is their energy-efficiency, reliability, and fault-tolerance among the installed bio-sensors. Due to the criticality of services related to WBAN applications, it is imperative to have a high degree of reliability and fault-tolerance, especially in the case of health-care monitoring applications where continuous monitoring of patient's vital information is required for diagnosis. However, in health-care applications, interference and body fading occur, which affect the communication among nodes and gateway, which reduces the reliability and fault-tolerance of the network. To address these issues, in this paper, we have proposed an energy-efficient fault-tolerant scheme to improve the reliability of WBANs. The proposed scheme adopted the cooperative communication and network coding strategy to minimize channel impairment and body fading effect and hence reduces the ensued faults, bit error rate, and energy consumption. Based on the proposed scheme, a case study was designed for remote Sepsis monitoring. The system identifies tracking indicators using cooperative communication to reduce hospital re-admissions and mortality rates. The proposed scheme performance is also evaluated via extensive simulations using various metrics. From the results obtained, it is evident that the proposed scheme reduces energy consumption, delay, and bit error rate, thereby increasing the throughput and reliability in WBAN.

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is an important element of future smart healthcare services in smart cities. For this reason, many research works have been undergone in WBAN. The significant research issue in the WBAN environment is Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. In literature, some of the works have been focused on QoS aspect of WBAN. However, they have only marginal impact due to ineffective network design and the usage of a single sink node. Also, most of the research works have been tested within a single BAN and present intra‐BAN communication. In practical, an effective multi‐BAN communication system is emerging due to the need of large‐scale healthcare system. This paper addresses these issues and designs a novel QoS‐aware Clustered Triad Layer (QC‐TriL) architecture for multi‐BAN environment. The novel QC‐TriL uses dual sink nodes in each BAN and both sinks are deployed in the optimal positions. To determine the optimal position, Type‐II Fuzzy Logic (T2FL) is proposed with different criteria. Next, we form clusters based on the positions of dual sink nodes. QC‐TriL adopts criticality‐aware routing by presenting Delay‐aware One‐Hop Transmission and Fused Rank Scheme (FuRank) for critical data and normal data routing respectively. The data transmission is organized by a novel 1D‐Dragonfly topology‐based Priority Dual TDMA (PD‐TDMA) scheduling protocol. Finally, multi‐BAN communication is enabled with an optimal route selected by QoS‐aware Emperor Penguin Colony (QoS‐EPC) algorithm. The QC‐TriL multi‐BAN environment is modeled in OMNeT++ simulator and evaluated in terms of energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, throughput, and delay. The experiments show promising results for the multi‐BAN environment.

This paper deals with the lifetime problem in the Internet of Things. We first propose an efficient cluster-based scheme named "Cuckoo-search Clustering with Two-hop Routing Tree (CC-TRT)" to develop a two-hop load-balanced data aggregation routing tree in the network. CC-TRT uses a modified energyaware cuckoo-search algorithm to fairly select the best cluster head (CH) for each cluster. The applied cuckoo-search algorithm makes the CH role to rotate between different sensors round by round. Subsequently, we extend the CC-TRT scheme to present two methods for constructing multi-hop data aggregation routing trees, named "Cuckoo-search Clustering with Multi-Hop Routing Tree (CC-MRT)" and "Cuckoo-search Clustering with Weighted Multi-hop Routing Tree (CC-WMRT)." Both CC-MRT and CC-WMRT rely on a two-level structure; they not only use an energy-aware cuckoo-search algorithm to fairly select the best CHs but also adopt a load-balanced high-level routing tree to route the aggregated data of CHs to the sink node. However, CC-WMRT slightly has a better performance thanks to its low-level routing strategy. As an advantage, the proposed schemes balance the energy consumption among different sensors. Numerical results show the efficiency of the CC-TRT, CC-MRT, and CC-WMRT algorithms in terms of the number of transmissions, remaining energy, energy consumption variance, and network lifetime.
