IoT-Scan: Network Reconnaissance for the Internet of Things

Abstract: Network reconnaissance is a core networking and security procedure aimed at discovering devices and their properties. For IP-based networks, several network reconnaissance tools are available, such as Nmap. For the Internet of Things (IoT), there is currently no similar tool capable of discovering devices across multiple protocols. In this paper, we present IoT-Scan, a universal IoT network reconnaissance tool. IoT-Scan is based on software defined radio (SDR) technology, which allows for a flexible software-b… Show more

“…A network discovery attack is a type of cyber/Internet attack in which an attacker sends probe packets to a target network or system in order to gather information about the system's configuration, vulnerabilities, or available services. Network discovery attacks can be used to gather intelligence for more sophisticated attacks, such as DoS attacks or network intrusions [29]. Network discovery attacks can take many forms, including ping sweeps, port scans, and banner grabbing.…”

“…Network discovery attacks can be challenging to detect as the probe packets may not contain malicious payloads or raise alarms in traditional security systems. Therefore, it is important for organizations to implement a comprehensive security strategy that includes monitoring for probe packets and other indicators of potential network discovery activity [29].…”

“…They further analyzed the results of the search and stated how these results can be utilized as a tool for attacking an IoT device. In addition, Gvozdenovic et al [9] introduced IoT-Scan as an alternative to NMap for scanning IoT devices. The IoT-Scan is based on software-defined radio and is capable of performing passive, active, multichannel, and multiprotocol scanning.…”
