Ipsilateral Medial and Lateral Discoid Meniscus with Medial Meniscus Tear

Abstract: Introduction:Discoid meniscus is a well-documented knee pathology, and there are many cases of medial or lateral discoid meniscus reported in the literature. However, ipsilateral concurrent medial and lateral discoid meniscus is very rare, and only a few cases have been reported. Herein, we report a case of concurrent medial and lateral discoid meniscus.Case Report:A 27-year-old Japanese man complained of pain on medial joint space in his right knee that was diagnosed as a complete medial and lateral discoid m… Show more

“…Concurrent meniscal tears identified intraoperatively have been frequently reported in prior reports of MDM. 13,15,18,[23][24][25][26] Consistent with the literature, 75% of our cases demonstrated meniscal tears; one-third of tears were of the horizontal cleavage variety-the most common meniscal tear reported in the MDM literature. 13,15,18,[23][24][25][26] Other reports have observed additional knee abnormalities, including complete coalescence of the MDM and anterior cruciate ligament, 23 concurrent LDM, 26 and cysts anterolateral 27 or posterior 28 to the meniscus.…”

“…8,9 La incidencia del menisco discoide lateral bilateral es de hasta 25% en la población asiática, y el menisco discoide medial bilateral es poco frecuente. [10][11][12][13][14] La coexistencia de un menisco discoide medial y lateral en la misma rodilla es más raro, 15,16 mientras que la coexistencia en ambas rodillas sólo se ha reportado una vez. 17…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, only six cases have been reported in the literature to date. [1] e meniscus, due to their semilunar shape, adds stability to the knee as well as is thought to reduce stress and friction from motion. A discoid meniscus is an anatomic variant which reduces the stability of the knee and has higher rates of tearing and degenerating.…”
