Background Hospital accreditation (HA) is an external evaluation of a hospital’s structures, processes and results by an independent professional accreditation body using pre-established optimum standards. The Iranian hospital accreditation system faces several challenges. The overall aim of this study was to develop a model for Iran national hospital accreditation program. Methods This research uses the modified Delphi technique to develop and verify a model of hospital accreditation. The first draft of the HA model was introduced through a critical review of 20 pioneer accreditation models and semi-structured interviews with 151 key informants from Public, private, semi-public, charity and military hospitals in Iran. Three rounds of Delphi were conducted with 28 experts of hospital accreditation to verify the proposed model. Panel members were selected from authors of research articles and key speakers in the area of hospital accreditation, senior managers of the country’s health system, university professors in the fields of health policy and management across the country. Results A comprehensive model for hospital accreditation was introduced and verified in this study. The HA model has ten constructs of which seven are enablers (“Management and leadership”, “Planning”, “Education and Research”, “employee management”, “patient management”, “resource management”, and “process management”) and three are the results (“employee results”, “patient and society results” and “hospital results”). These constructs were further broken into 43 sub-constructs. The enablers and results scored 65 and 35% of the model’s total scores respectively. Then, about 150 accreditation standards were written and verified. Conclusions A comprehensive hospital accreditation model was developed and verified. Proper attention to structures, processes and outcomes and systemic thinking during the development of the model is one of the advantages of the hospital accreditation model developed in this study. Hospital accreditation bodies can use this model to develop or revise their hospital accreditation models.

Purpose: This study focuses on the concept of medical tourism, its significance, and its implications for the Jordanian health sector. Patients travel to Jordan to seek elective, less expensive medical procedures while having a vacation. Other factors that promote medical tourism include better quality of care, shorter queues, exotic locations, and culture. The Medical Liability Law passed not long ago, further encouraged more patients to seek treatment in Jordan. Medical tourism's contribution to Jordanian GDP is noteworthy; providing economic growth and employment opportunities. Though medical tourism received great recognition, little is said about specific concerns like the brain drain of health workers and incurring high costs on Jordanian citizens. This issue needs further attention. Design/methodology/approach: This research employed qualitative analysis by conducting semi-structured, in-person interviews with ten Jordanian professionals who have an interest in the field of medical tourism. The interviewees included a health marketer, private hospital directors, a health policymaker, a health accreditation expert, a quality assurance manager, and health care professionals. The key participants responded to the same open-ended interview questions. The selected participants represent a diversity of facilitators involved in the medical tourism industry. Interviews were transcribed and correlated with the literature. Findings: The competitive edge of Jordan in medical tourism arises from cost-effective health services, its renowned reputation in healthcare, and the diversity of touristic attractions. Most foreign patients that come to Jordan are from Arab countries. Jordan offers no language barrier and similar culture. The importance of medical tourism to Jordan is reflected in its contribution to the GDP by 3.5 percent or $1 billion. Little attention is drawn to some issues such as brain drain, high-incurring costs, promotional campaigns, medical inequality, and other pitfalls. Practical implications: Health policymakers and health services providers around the globe with similar health systems have expressed interest in facilitating the growth of the medical tourism industry. They should encourage what reduces operational and medical risks that may accompany the medical tourism industry. This paper could provide a better understanding of medical tourism in Jordan as a hot spot in the world for medical tourism. Social implications: Medical tourism can drive a robust social multiplier effect on a nation in terms of enhancing employment generation as well as fostering a culture of innovation and advancement in the field of healthcare and medicine. Originality/value: The interviews and other secondary data sources help shed some insight into the current status and ramifications of medical tourism in Jordan.

Introduction Since hospitals play an important role in dealing with disaster victims, this study was conducted to audit the functional preparedness of the selected military hospital in response to incidents and disasters. Materials and methods This applied action research was conducted in all wards of a military hospital from September 2020 to September 2021. The functional preparedness of the hospital was assessed using a functional preparedness checklist containing 17 domains and the weaknesses of the hospital were identified. Then, during the hospital audit cycle, a plan was developed to improve work processes and the functional preparedness of different wards of the hospital in response to incidents and disasters using the FOCUS-PDCA model. The functional preparedness of the hospital was compared before and after the intervention and analyzed using SPSS22. Results The relative mean score of hospital preparedness in response to disasters was 508 out of 900 (56.44%) before the intervention, which was moderate. The relative mean score of the hospital preparedness in response to disasters was 561 (63.63%) after the intervention, which was good. The highest preparedness was related to risk assessment (85%) and the lowest preparedness was related to victims’ dead bodies (44%). Conclusion Considering the effect of action research on improving the hospital’s functional preparedness in response to disasters, other healthcare facilities are encouraged to incorporate auditing into their work plans.
