Iridopathy in Eyes with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: Detection of Early Stage of Rubeosis Iridis

Abstract: Forty-two eyes of 31 proliferative diabetic retinopathy patients with laser flare intensity ≥ 20 photon counts/ms underwent fluorescein iris angiography to evaluate any changes in the blood-iris barrier and iris biomicroscopy to detect rubeosis iridis. Fluorescein iris angiography revealed abnormal dye leakage in all eyes. Laser flare intensity significantly correlated with the degree of dye leakage. Eyes with dye leakage from only the pupillary border had no rubeosis. In 11 out of 18 (61%) eyes with moderate… Show more

“…However, routine ophthalmoscopy has a low sensitivity for detecting early or subtle stages of IA, a finding confirmed in our study (2 eyes with IA detected clinically, compared with 14 eyes detected histopathologically). 18,28 The degree of AES enhancement might be a valuable diagnostic parameter in the choice between enucleation and conservative treatment strategies. Normal AES enhancement seems to be an indication for considering globe salvage rather than enucleation.…”

“…The DR patients with iris new blood vessels which was not around the pupil margin was excluded to the statistic analysis. The protocol was as follows: (1) The center point of the pupil was marked (Figure 1A). ( 2) The area of leakage lesions around pupil was marked.…”

“…The main complications of diabetic retinopathy were diabetic iridopathy (DI) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) [1]. Iris angiography (IA), which primarily includes iris uorescein angiography (IFA) and iris indocyanine green angiography (IICGA), has been used for the evaluation of DI [2].…”

“…The association between diabetic retinopathy and iridopathy is well-known, and iris fluorescein angiography, 89 iris indocyanine green angiography, 10 and laser photometry 11 have been used to investigate iris microangiopathy. Iris transillumination may also provide perspective on diabetic iridopathy.…”
