Iron Absorption in Celiac Disease and Nutraceutical Effect of 7-Hydroxymatairesinol. Mini-Review

Abstract: Anemia is the main extra-gastrointestinal symptom in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and other cytokines are secreted and act in the microenvironment of the small intestine mucous membrane of IBD patients. Iron is essential for multiple cell functions and its homeostasis is regulated by the hepcidin–ferroportin axis. Hepcidin (HEPC) is mainly produced by the liver in response to iron needs but is also an acute phase protein. During inflammation, hepcidin is upregulated by IL-6 and is r… Show more

“…The administration of an intravenous iron formulation is recommended in patients with severe anemia with hemoglobin values below 10 g/dL [2,6,33]. Some nutraceutical molecules contained in functional foods are under evaluation for their properties to ameliorate bowel inflammation and iron absorption [34,35].…”

“…Inflammatory factors can increase the expression of ferricin in the intestinal tract, thereby reducing the absorption of iron. Preliminary studies show that the polyphenol 7-hydroxy matairesinol (7-HMR) produced by plants can significantly reduce the gene expression of the low-iron regulator, thus improving the symptoms of iron deficiency ( 88 ).…”
