Iron in Cardiovascular Disease: Challenges and Potentials

Abstract: Iron is essential for many biological processes. Inadequate or excess amount of body iron can result in various pathological consequences. The pathological roles of iron in cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been intensively studied for decades. Convincing data demonstrated a detrimental effect of iron deficiency in patients with heart failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension, but it remains unclear for the pathological roles of iron in other cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, ferroptosis is an iron-depende… Show more

“…Several studies have shown that iron metabolism and ferroptosis are involved throughout the development of CHD and influence the key pathological changes of CHD. These include vascular endothelial damage, arterial wall plaque stability damage, CM death, MF, and MH [ 11 , 37 ] ( Table 2 ).…”

“…As discussed above, ferroptosis has been found to play a significant role in the pathological progression of CHD [ 11 , 37 ]. Accordingly, targeting ferroptosis will become a new therapeutic strategy for treating CHD.…”

“…As an essential micronutrient, iron plays an important role in several biological processes, such as heme synthesis, mitochondrial respiration, DNA synthesis, and iron-dependent catalytic reactions [ 1 ]. However, abnormal iron regulation and accumulation has been found to be involved in pathological processes that are associated with many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, although the underlying mechanisms require further exploration [ 2 , 3 ].…”

“…Therefore, the detection of metal ions has important practical significance today [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. For example, iron plays an important role in many biological reaction processes, but its deficiency and excess can lead to various pathological obstacles [ 7 , 8 ]. Fluorescence sensors are often used in trace heavy metal ion sensing tools because of their convenient, rapid, and sensitive analysis [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”
