Is Container a Natural and Embodied Image Schema? A Developmental, Pragmatic, and Cultural Proposal

Abstract: Conceptual metaphor theory showed, from embodiment, the importance of metaphor as a cognitive process. This influential theory assumes the existence of primitive but powerful mental structures called image schemas. In this paper, we conduct a critical inquiry about these structures from the developmental perspective of the pragmatics of the object and show they have serious problems. Taking the CONTAINER image schema as a case, we discuss the plausibility of image schemas in early childhood. W… Show more

“…The theory of image schemas is widely utilized in various cognitive studies (e.g. Alessandroni, 2017;Dancygier, 2017;Senkbeil, 2017;Martinez et al, 2018;Ioannou 2018;Vernillo, 2019), and it has proved to be of great application potential, even inspiring new research in the area of human-computer interactions (Hurtienne, 2017).…”

“…In short, the presence and creation of Cycladic figurines during an islander's lifetime provided a powerful locus of interaction through which collective attention, activities and conceptual meanings could develop (cf. Alessandroni & Rodríguez 2017). Ultimately, the evidence from the cognitive sciences shows that Cycladic sculpting was ideally suited for generating shared attention and understanding through pragmatic engagements and lifetime learning.…”

“…These mappings are possible thanks to the existence of imageschemas (Johnson, 1987(Johnson, /1990) that allow us to build our experience on the levels of physical and movement perceptions, understand abstract aspects of reality, confer meaning, and guide our reasoning of the world. They are "recurring, dynamic patterns of our perceptual interactions and motor programs" (Johnson, 1987(Johnson, /1990 xiv) that emerge due to our recurrent kinaesthetic experience in the world (for a critical review of imageschemas, see Alessandroni & Rodríguez, 2017). For example, the BALANCE schema emerges from activities such as being moved, swinging oneself, walking without falling, and dancing, by a process of conflation and abstraction of experience, images, and perceptions related to activities that involve two opposing forces (see Figure 1).…”
