Is Propranolol Effective in Primary Polydipsia?

Abstract: These results suggest that propranolol may be useful for the treatment of polydipsia in patients with schizophrenia. Its efficacy could be related to inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system. Additional research using the controlled pharmacotherapeutic trials is required to confirm these findings.

“…. Treatment effects by angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (captopril 31,32 and enalapril 33 ), beta‐blockers (propranolol 34–36 ), opioid antagonists (naloxone 37 ), demeclocycline* 38 , carbamazepine 39 , and lithium 40,41 have been reported but sample sizes of these studies are small and the assessments are inconsistent 42 . Furthermore, the risk of side effects occurring due to concomitant use is not clear, so there is no desirable pharmacotherapy 2D .…”

“…However, studies have been small and inconsistent. 8,9 Propranolol, 10 a beta adrenergic receptor blocker; irbesartan, 11 an angiotensin-II receptor blocker; demeclocycline, 12 a tetracycline that inhibits antidiuretic hormone action; and naltrexone, 9 a mu opioid antagonist, have been studied with inconclusive results and a variety of adverse effects 5,7,13 (Table 2 [8][9][10][11][12][13] ).…”

“…Blokada receptorów β-adrenergicznych w nerce skutkuje spadkiem wydzielania reniny, a pośred-nio również angiotensyny II. Wykazano, że β-blokery takie jak propranolol [49] czy pindolol [50] mogą skutecznie zmniejszać nasilenie polidypsji psychogennej i normalizować poziom sodu w osoczu. Podobne obserwacje poczyniono w odniesieniu do inhibitorów konwertazy angiotensyny.…”

“…β-adrenergic receptor blockade in kidneys reduced the secretion of renin, and indirectly also angiotensin II. It has been shown that β-blockers such as propranolol [49] and pindolol [50] can effectively reduce the severity of psychogenic polydipsia and normalise the level of sodium in plasma. Similar observations have been made in relation to angiotensin convertase inhibitors.…”
