“…There seems to be some evidence for this in a single case report, with sequential morphological analysis, of a patient who survived acute post-traumatic pulmonary fibrosis. 32 In this instance the newly synthesised and only loosely cross linked collagen (with its increased solubility properties) may be removed more readily by degrading enzymes. On the other hand, in ongoing chronic pulmonary fibrosis recurrent "injuries" to the lung tissue may be assumed to result in a progressive and irreversible process.…”

“…A systemic reaction of connective tissue leading to fibrosis can be observed in protracted shock of man and animals [2,3,11,12,17,18,211. The initiating factors are not known.…”

“…Septic shock plays an important role not only in man, but also in animals. As known from shock patients (15,16,20,21) and from animal experiments (4, 9, 23), the protracted shock leads to a severe interstitial cell infiltration and after some weeks to focal fibrosis in various organs. The glomeruli show distinct alterations (17, 18) but these findings have mostly been described by light microscopy only, or they have dealt with changes during the early stages of shock (14).…”
