Is the clinical lipidomics a potential goldmine?

Abstract: Clinical lipidomics is a new extension of lipidomics to study lipid profiles, pathways, and networks by characterizing and quantifying the complete lipid molecules in cells, biopsy, or body fluids of patients. It undoubtfully has more values if lipidomics can be integrated with the data of clinical proteomic, genomic, and phenomic profiles. A number of challenges, e.g., instability, specificity, and sensitivity, in lipidomics have to be faced and overcome before clinical application. The association of lipidom… Show more

“…Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by a progressive neuronal loss that leads to cognitive, sensorial, and/or motor impairments. Although their early detection and prevention is optimum, these maladies are generally diagnosed when neuronal death has already begun, and sometimes with a progression that is extremely fast (Arneson, Zhang, Yang, & Narayanan, ; Laforce et al, ; Zhang, Han, & Wang, ). Cell therapy is one of the most promising strategies for dealing with neurodegenerative diseases, by palliating or slowing down neuronal death.…”

“…Cav‐1, especially altered DNA methylation patterns in the promoter region, was associated with chronic lung diseases. Treatment with DNA methyltransferase inhibitor can activate Cav‐1 through demethylation of CpGi shores as therapeutic potentials for lung diseases, although there still are a large number of challenges to be overcome to meet criteria of disease‐specific biomarkers and targets to dynamically monitor disease severity, duration, stage, and response to therapy 96‐111 . Understanding of Cav‐1 may contribute to developing the new therapies.…”

“…Lipid elements dominate compounds in cell secretions and vesicles and thus lipid roles in cell-cell communication should be highly considered. With the development of lipidomics, altered lipidomic profiles have been identified as diseasespecific biomarkers and therapy-associated targets (Lva et al 2018a, b;Zhang et al 2018). Several lipidomic pathways involved in the biogenesis and functions of microvesicles and exosomes (Record et al 2018).…”
