Invasive alien plants are a major threat to biodiversity and they contribute to the unfavourable conservation status of habitats of interest to the European Community. In order to favour implementation of European Union Regulation no. 1143/2014 on invasive alien species, the Italian Society of Vegetation Science carried out a large survey led by a task force of 49 contributors with expertise in vegetation across all the Italian administrative regions. The survey summed up the knowledge on impact mechanisms of invasive alien plants in Italy and their outcomes on plant communities and the EU habitats of Community Interest, in accordance with Directive no. 92/ 43/EEC. The survey covered 241 alien plant species reported as having deleterious ecological impacts. The data collected illustrate the current state of the art, highlight the main gaps in knowledge, and suggest topics to be further investigated. In particular, the survey underlined competition as being the main mechanism of ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats. Of the 241 species, only Ailanthus altissima was found to exert an ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats in all Italian regions; while a further 20 species impact up to ten out of the 20 Italian administrative regions. Our data indicate that 84 out of 132 Natura 2000 Habitats (64%) are subjected to some degree of impact by invasive alien plants. Freshwater habitats and natural and semi-natural grassland formations were impacted by the highest number of alien species, followed by coastal sand dunes and inland dunes, and forests. Although not exhaustive, this research is the first example of nationwide evaluation of the ecological impacts of invasive alien plants on plant communities and Natura 2000 Habitats.

Invasive alien plant species (IAS) are one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity and the sustainable functioning of ecosystems and mitigating the threat posed by them is therefore of great importance. This study presents the results of a 15-year investigation into how IAS occur within natural forest reserves (NFR): unmanaged forest ecosystems within Austria, concluding that unmanaged forests are not resistant to plant invasions. The study comprised ground vegetation, regeneration, and stand structure surveys. The presence or absence of IAS in different forest types was assessed and the influencing variables for their presence or absence were determined. In addition, the study analysed whether the abundance of IAS has increased at the site level within the past decade. Significant differences in the probability of IAS presences between forest types (photosociological alliances) were found. The results of the study show that natural riparian and floodplain forests are among the forest types most vulnerable to biological invasions, which is reflected in elevation and soil type being determined as the main factors influencing the spread of IAS in unmanaged forests. The results of this study may be useful for persons responsible for sustainable forest management programmes or for managing forested areas within national parks. They provide a case study on non-intervention forest management policy in order to mitigate the impacts of IAS in protected areas. Forest areas, where IAS begin to spread can be identified, which in turn leads to measures in the early stages of invasion, and to optimise monitoring and control measures for relevant species in Central European forest types.

A Restinga é um importante ecossistema brasileiro que vem sendo acometido por problemas ambientais, a exemplo das invasões biológicas. Assim, objetivou-se com o presente trabalho realizar um levantamento das espécies naturalizadas e exóticas invasoras ocorrentes em sítios de Restinga no Nordeste brasileiro. Foram realizadas expedições em nove cidades de seis estados nordestinos. O levantamento ocorreu através de caminhadas (busca ativa) onde as espécies foram registradas por fotografias. Cada espécie foi classificada como naturalizada ou exótica invasora através de observações in situ e literatura específica. A composição de espécies das áreas foi comparada através da Similaridade de Jaccard (Sj) em três situações: lista completa, apenas as exóticas invasoras e apenas as naturalizadas. O teste de Mantel foi realizado para verificar se o tamanho e a distância entre áreas influenciaram nos resultados da similaridade. Foram amostradas 42 espécies, sendo 33 exóticas invasoras e nove naturalizadas. As espécies Leucena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit, Terminalia catappa L. e Cenchrus echinatus L. foram as únicas com ocorrência em todas as áreas. A similaridade florística variou bastante entre as situações testadas. O teste de Mantel não apresentou valores significativos. Nossos achados são preocupantes, em razão do elevado número de espécies e da alta quantidade de exóticas invasoras.
