“…Circulating IL-6 was measured in 16 articles, of which five reported significantly higher levels in PCOS women compared to healthy controls (Table 3) [53,55,70,73,116]. The remaining 11 studies found no significant difference in circulating IL-6 between PCOS and non-PCOS women [45,[48][49][50]56,59,63,67,82,92,96].…”

“…Of these, 45 studies provided data on other inflammatory markers such as IL-6, TNF-α, adiponectin, etc., as summarised in Table 2. Mean ± SD CRP values were not provided in 22 studies [42,46,60,62,63,65,66,68,72,73,78,82,83,92,93,99,108,110,112,118,119,121]. Authors of these articles were contacted to provide the missing data, but no response was received despite several reminders.…”

“…Due to the nature of the study, this could have encouraged some students experiencing PCOS-like symptoms to come forward for this study, while others without PCOS were not involved in PCOS screening, which could have had an impact on the results of this present study. On the contrary, previous studies have often used hospital settings such as blood donation centers19 and in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic patients,20 who might be considered as biased samples. Females who donate blood are generally healthy, which could account for the low frequency of PCOS in those study groups.…”

“…Data concerning C-reactive protein (CRP), a classic inflammation marker, are controversial. Several studies showed higher CRP concentrations in PCOS women than in controls 12,13 , while other authors report no significant differences when comparing both groups of women 14,15 .…”
