Is the Resistance of Large Conduit Arteries Also Decreased in Thyrotoxic Patients with Graves' Disease?

Abstract: Longitudinal arterial resistance (RL) originates during blood flow in large conduit arteries while peripheral resistance (RP) reflects the tension of arterioles. Using a new noninvasive ultrasonic system of assessment of mechanical properties of arterial walls, we aimed to discover whether both RL and RP are affected by excess of thyroid hormones (TH). We compared two groups: hyperthyroid (Graves' group, n = 25) and euthyroid (control group, n = 23). RL and RP values were obtained from the analysis of the four… Show more

“…The mean age of occurrence of cardiac complications of thyrotoxicosis as seen from this report is 40.8 years. The mean age of this group of people in this report though lower than that reported by Famuyiwa [10] is comparable to the more recent report by Danbauchi et al [14]. In this report, cardiac complications of thyrotoxicosis were noted 30.09±5.57 years.…”

“…Though cardiac complications of thyrotoxicosis had been reported to be more common in the elderly [13] but Nigerians had reported contrary to this observation [10-12]. The mean age of occurrence of cardiac complications of thyrotoxicosis as seen from this report is 40.8 years.…”

“…Only a few studies included a control group for comparison. Two studies performed pulse wave analysis from radial tonometry estimating Aix from recordings of the wave reflection [12,17], whereas 3 other studies assessed arterial stiffness using ultrasonic measurements of changes in large artery diameter [13][14][15].…”

“…The gold standard measurement of arterial stiffness is carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) [10]. Only a few studies have been published on arterial stiffness in GD, and none of these assessed carotid-femoral PWV [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Increased arterial stiffness might provide a piece to the puzzle of the excess cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in GD.…”
