Is There A Role for Abscisic Acid, A Proven Anti-Inflammatory Agent, in the Treatment of Ischemic Retinopathies?

Abstract: Ischemic retinopathies (IRs) are the main cause of severe visual impairment and sight loss, and are characterized by loss of blood vessels, accompanied by hypoxia, and neovascularization. Actual therapies, based on anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) strategies, antioxidants or anti-inflammatory therapies are only partially effective or show some adverse side effects. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a phytohormone present in vegetables and fruits that can be naturally supplied by the dietary intake and has b… Show more

“…Although abscisic acids are non-phenolic compounds, their presence in honey samples was investigated as they compose a significant part of honey’s bioactive content with many beneficial properties to human health [ 42 ]. The isomers of abscisic acid have been reported to encounter in many types of honey, which is also confirmed in this study [ 27 , 28 , 41 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ].…”

“…Abscisic acid is widely described as a terpenoid phytohormone naturally present in fruits and vegetables [ 26 ], with a crucial role in controlling glucose homeostasis in humans [ 9 ]. This bioactive compound is currently and extensively being investigated for various therapeutic purposes, such as treatment of diabetes, cancer, ischemic retinopathy, and neurodegenerative diseases, due to its broad attributed biological activity spectrum [ 27 , 28 , 29 ]. The first aim of this study was to evaluate the potential beneficial effects on glucose homeostasis management after supplementation with two different doses of a TN-based nutraceutical product rich in ABA.…”

“…It has been shown that ABA is involved in inflammation and innate immune responses through activation of lanthionine synthetase Clike protein 2 (LANCL2)/PPARγ, which is known to regulate the inflammatory responses (Baliño et al, 2019). Guri et al has reported that dietary ABA supplementation ameliorates colonic inflammatory lesions through T-cell PPARγ-dependent mechanism (Guri et al, 2011).…”
