Our university has offered a massive educational video service since 2010, as part of a blended learning model that allows students to balance active participation in the classroom with remote access to video-recorded lectures. In these years, we have collected a huge amount of very detailed data about the students' access to the service. Together with additional information that characterize a university system (e.g. students' performance or course population), these data represent a precious ground set to assess the educational model. The paper describes an experimental set to profile the use of the educational video service, whose results will contribute to improve the model. Specifically the paper analyzes the students' service use relatively to different transversal course characteristics, such as level, main topic, population, success rate. As a result, it outlines the profile of the "ideal" courses for which students highly appreciate the service. This information will help educational designers to select the future courses to be included in the service, but it will also give directions on the sectors where improvements are necessary. Finally, the paper experimentally demonstrates a positive impact of the educational video service on students' performance, and specifically on the exam success rate.

The introductory programming course (IPC) holds a special significance in computing disciplines as this course serves as a prerequisite for studying the higher level courses. Students generally face difficulties during their initial stages of learning how to program. Continuous efforts are being made to examine this course for identifying potential improvements. This article presents the review of the state-of-the-art research exploring various components of IPC by examining sixty-six articles published between 2014 and 2020 in well-reputed research venues. The results reveal that several useful methods have been proposed to support teaching and learning in IPC. Moreover, the research in IPC presented useful ways to conduct assessments, and also demonstrated different techniques to examine improvements in the IPC contents. In addition, a variety of tools are evaluated to support the related course processes. Apart from the aforementioned facets, this research explores other interesting dimensions of IPC, such as collaborative learning, cognitive assessments, and performance predictions. In addition to reviewing the recent advancements in IPC, this study proposes a new taxonomy of IPC research dimensions. Furthermore, based on the successful practices that are listed in the literature, some useful guidelines and advices for instructors have also been reported in this article. Lastly, this review presents some pertinent open research issues to highlight the future dimensions for IPC researchers.

Experience-Based Lecture for Vibration Engineering Using Dual-Scale Experiments: Free Vibration of an Actual Seismic Building and Controlling the Vibration of Scale-Down Experimental Model

This paper proposes an experience-based lecture style that offers dual-scale experiments in combination. Lectures for vibration engineering were designed based on the proposed style and offered to undergraduate students. In the proposed style, experiments on free vibration on a seismic building for secondyear students and advanced vibration control using an effective device for fourth-year students are examined in combination. The lecture style trials were repeated twice, once each in 2015 and 2016, with about two hundred second-year students; the students felt the free vibration of the five-story building which had a 6,100 ton weight inside and witnessed the mechanism of the base-isolated layer. To follow the demonstration steps, we developed an experimental device. The experimental device is composed of a vibration component corresponding to a building, and a motor cart with a handle corresponding to the ground. These are connected via a linear actuator that can exert one-dimensional force on the vibration component as a function of the input voltage. In the lectures conducted in 2017 and 2018, the students oscillate the cart and observe the motion of the vibration component. In addition, the virtual reality cameras for offering students a visually rich experience attracted students' interest. The questionnaire results showed that almost all of the students valued the lectures as useful. Since most of the students answered that the combination of the large-scale demonstration and scale-down experiment was useful, the proposed lecture style achieved the expected overall goals.
