Isolated laryngeal leishmaniasis in an immunocompetent patient in India

Abstract: Otogenic tetanus is common in a developing country like India. However, adequate sedation and elimination of spasms by medical treatment is sufficient in most cases. Once treated, relapses are rare. The authors report a 2-year-old girl who relapsed twice after near complete recovery. This communique Ł is intended to highlight that tetanus is still a significant health problem in third-world countries and a relapse after such a dreadful disease is terrifying.

“…Diagnosis is very often a challenge with several reports in the literature of a significantly delayed diagnosis or even an erroneous clinical diagnosis of malignancy (Casolari et al , ; Mathur et al , ; Tiseo et al , ; Pellicioli et al , ; Cocuzza et al , ; Oryan et al , ). Differential diagnosis encompasses other infectious or non‐infectious diseases such as fungal infections (blastomycosis), tertiary syphilis, sarcoidosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, tuberculosis, leprosy, lethal midline granuloma, pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigoid, plasmacytic gingivitis, (deficiencies) anemia, leukemia, anti‐neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)‐associated (Wegener) granulomatosis, and squamous cell carcinoma (Casolari et al , ; Palmeiro et al , ; Pellicioli et al , ).…”
