“…We reviewed the literature searching the terms ‘spleen metastasis’, ‘splenic metastases’ and ‘cervical cancer’ or ‘cancer of cervix’ and we found only eight cases reported (Table 1). 4–11 Treatment of such recurrences consisted of surgery plus chemotherapy in three cases, surgery alone in one case and chemotherapy alone in four cases.…”

“…However in case of metastatic tumor of the spleen with widespread visceral dissemination of primary cervical cancer, surgery has limited indications because the overall prognosis of this advanced disease is poor, and no data exist on survival. In cases of symptomatic splenomegaly, splenectomy can be performed as palliative intent with acceptable morbidity to improve the quality of life 5–7,11 . Indeed it is difficult to predict the prognostic impact of a solitary splenic metastasis surgically treated, because of the rarity of this lesion and the heterogeneity of literature data that only concern single case reports with short follow‐up periods 4–11 .…”

“…Only 22 cases of carcinoma cervix with splenic metastases have been documented (4) in the English‐language literature mostly in the setting of disseminated disease. Of these, six have been case reports of isolated splenic metastasis, three of squamous cell carcinoma (4–6) , two from adenocarcinoma (7,8) , and one from an unspecified histological type (9) .…”

“…Patients with distant metastases are generally referred for palliative chemotherapy 2 . Surgical removal of distant recurrence from cervical cancer has been carried out only in a few highly selected patients 3,6,10 . Intra-abdominal metastases are usually diagnosed either during staging for primary disease 3 or when multiple recurrences are already present.…”
