Isolation and Identification of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Species from Bovine Body Sites and Streak Canals of Nulliparous Heifers

Abstract: Heifers (n = 103) ranging in age from 1d to 2 yr were sampled to determine the coagulase-negative staphylococcal flora of haircoat, nares, vagina, teat skin, and streak canal. A total of 2706 staphylococal strains were identified from 3612 bacterial isolates. Other genera or groups identified included Bacillus, Micrococcus, Corynebacterium, and coliforms. Staphylococci were identified utilizing a simplified biochemical scheme. Staphylococcus xylosus, S. chromogenes, and S. warneri were the predominant species … Show more

“…The average of staphylococcus load is up to 10 3 UCF / ml and is in equivalent tendency to that reported to Tadla region (encompassing Beni Mellal area) (up to 5 x 10 3 UCF / ml; [6]) and at lesser degree to that reported in Oujda city [4]. Staphylococcus species besides streptococcus species were the most commonly isolated bacteria in milk produced by animals with subclinical mastitis [18] and [19]. Our results which are slightly different from those of Afif et al [6]in the same area, show firstly that an effort has been made in the sense of ameliorating the quality of raw cow milk and secondly that they are in favor of a relative respect of hygienic procedures in the cooperatives investigated and this could be in part explained by the this can be explained by the necessity of the producers to respect the conditions of the manufacturers.…”

“…The coagulase-negative staphylococci including Staphylococcus auricularis (60) were considered the most common bacteria from skin of various animals (18,53). Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus are other examples of species found on cow teat skin (49).…”
