Isolation and Identification of the Five Novel Flavonoids from Genipa americana Leaves

Abstract: Genipa americana is a medicinal plant popularly known as “jenipapo”, which occurs in Brazil and belongs to the Rubiaceae family. It is a species widely distributed in the tropical Central and South America, especially in the Cerrado biome. Their leaves and fruits are used as food and popularly in folk medicine to treat anemias, as an antidiarrheal, and anti-syphilitic. Iridoids are the main secondary metabolites described from G. americana, but few studies have been conducted with their leaves. In this study, … Show more

“…In the MS spectrum, peak 12 exhibited a parent ion at m/z 623[M-H] − . In the MS/MS spectrum, a base peak ion consistent with the isorhamnetin aglycone skeleton was observed at m/z 315[M-H-162-147] − due to subsequent loss of a rhamnosyl and a galactosyl residue [ 26 ]. Furthermore, there was a quercetin fragment observed at m/z 300 due to the demethylation of the isorhamnetin aglycone.…”

“…Flavonoids are most often associated with sugar in the conjugated form to be O-glycosides or C-glycosides. They can also exist as aglycones ( 54 ). The glycosides are normally attached to position 3 or 7, with the most common carbohydrates occupying those positions being D-glucose, L-rhamnose, gluco-rhamnose, galactose or arabinose ( 52 ).…”

“…The liquid-liquid partition was performed using 3 portions of petroleum ether, followed by 3 portions of chloroform and, finally, 3 portions of ethyl acetate. [17] The purified fraction was corrected to pH 4 using HCl solution 10%, followed by filtration through a funnel with glass wool and cotton. After purification, the extract was resuspended in saline water to obtain the purified flavonoid SAE.…”
