Isolation, Identification and Study of Antimicrobial Property of a Bioactive Compound in an Indian Medicinal Plant Acalypha indica (Indian-Nettle)

Abstract: Fresh, dried and powdered samples of leaf, stem and root of Acalypha indica were subjected to fractional distillation in a soxhlet apparatus using solvents such as hexane, chloroform, acetone and methanol. The plant extracts and a synthetic antifungal compound, Clotrimazole (authentic standard) were subjected to TLC and HPLC analyses. The R f (relative front) value of Clotrimazole was 0.371. The reason for these results are not clear, but according to Nostro et al 2000, who has demonstrated that species such as Helichrysum italicum or Phytolocca dodecandra showed moderate activity against Escherichia coli when the diethyl extract obtained after extraction of the aqueous suspension of the drug powder was used, but that there were no active extracts or fractions against this bacteria when a sequential extraction with petroleum ether, dichloromethane, dichloromethane-methanol (9:1) and methanol were used supports our findings and suggests that the solvent and extraction system may both modify the final results.…”
