Isolation of NDM-1-producing multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas putida from a paediatric case of acute gastroenteritis, India

Abstract: Pseudomonas putida is an uncommon opportunistic pathogen, usually susceptible to antimicrobial agents. Data concerning resistance to antimicrobial agents in clinical P. putida isolates are limited. To the best of our knowledge we report for the first time the isolation of NDM-1-producing multidrug-resistant P. putida from a case of acute gastroenteritis. The isolate showed resistance to a wide range of antimicrobials, including fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins and carbapenems. The isolate also… Show more

“…It causes a variety of different infections, from easy-to-cure ear infections, serious infections of burn patients, to severe lung infections which lead to major complications in cystic fibrosis patients (Barbier and Wolff, 2010 ; Azzopardi et al, 2014 ). Besides Pseudomonas aeruginosa , other species e.g., Pseudomonas putida or Pseudomonas fluorescens are also a cause for infections in clinical settings (Gilarranz et al, 2013 ; Erol et al, 2014 ; Bhattacharya et al, 2015 ; Mazurier et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Because hospital isolates of P . putida have been studied in terms of their resistance to antibiotics (i.e., [ 9 , 21 , 28 – 31 ]), and more recently in terms of their potential to colonize and cause human tissue damage [ 32 ] we chose to focus on identifying genes present within P . putida clinical isolates that mediate nosocomial infections and survival in hospital settings.…”

“…Occurrences of NDM have been reported from many countries including Asian countries such as China, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam [3,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Among many variants, NDM-5 has been reported to possess increased resistance to carbapenems and broad-spectrum cephalosporins and was first reported in 2011 in an Escherichia coli isolate from United Kingdom [10].…”
