Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) constitute a group of disorders characterized by changes present at early ages and manifesting in the areas of development of communication, behavior, and interpersonal relationship. Because ASD signiicantly afects communication and the social skills, all multicultural context needs to be beter investigated. There is an urgent need to understand the impact of migratory process, bilingual environment exposure on the language development of children with ASD. The present study aims to present the results of 657 foreign residents in Brazil that answered an online questionnaire to know the consolidated information about ASD. Participants from 23 countries responded to the survey. Bolivia and Argentina were the countries with the highest number of participants. The present study found that 100% of the participants have heard of autism. About 80.6% of the sample had a family member with autism. The sociodemographic diversity identiied in this study relects the sociocultural diversity present in Brazil, besides reinforcing the importance of considering this population when thinking about strategies and behaviors directed at individuals with ASD.

Dans un contexte migratoire, de nombreux défis se présentent aux parents d’un enfant ayant des besoins spéciaux. En première ligne, ils nécessitent un accès à des ressources de soutien afin de poursuivre une prise en charge optimale de l’enfant. Dans le but d’établir un état des lieux actualisé des connaissances préalables sur le recours aux services d’aide, une étude de la portée a été menée. À partir des bases de données interrogées, 20 écrits scientifiques ont été sélectionnés pour déterminer les types de services utilisés, les composantes qui modulent ce recours et l’évolution des attentes en mesures d’aide. Le soutien informationnel se révèle le plus présent dans les études. Parmi les facteurs modulant l’utilisation des ressources de soutien, les composantes communicationnelles et culturelles se distinguent par le nombre d’écrits dans lesquels elles ressortent. L’évolution du recours dans le temps reste peu documentée dans les études retenues. Le choix des parents concernant les modalités de soutien devrait être exploré davantage.In the context of immigration, there are numerous challenges facing families living with a child with special needs. First, they require access to support services in order to provide continued adequate care to the child. In order to establish an update of the background knowledge on the use of support measures, a scoping review was carried out. Twenty scientific studies were selected from database queries to determine the types of services used, the components modulating this use and the evolution of needs in assistance measures. Informational support is found to be the most present in the studies. Among the factors defining the use of support services, communication and cultural components are distinguished by the number of studies in which they stand out. According to the selected studies, there is little documentation on the evolution of assistance uptake through time. Parents’ choice of support modalities should be explored further

The Impact of Bilingualism on the Executive Functions of Autistic Children: A Study of English–Arabic Children

There is evidence to suggest that certain executive functions are impaired in autistic children, contributing to many daily challenges. Regular use of two languages has the potential to positively influence executive functions, though evidence is mixed. Little is known about the impact of bilingualism on the executive functions of autistic children, with only a handful of studies published worldwide to date. This study investigated the impact of bilingualism on sustained attention, interference control, flexible switching and working memory, in Arabic–English autistic children (n = 27) and their typically developing peers (n = 66), aged 5–12 years old. Groups were matched on age, nonverbal IQ and socioeconomic status, and completed a battery of computerized tests. Results showed an advantage for bilingual autistic children relative to their monolingual peers in sustained attention, and equivalent performance between bilingual and monolingual autistic children on all other executive functions. There were no generalized positive effects of bilingualism, and typically‐developing children performed better than autistic children on all measures. The findings indicate that bilingualism does not negatively impact the executive function skills of autistic children, and that it might mitigate difficulties in sustained attention. Lay Summary Contrary to widespread belief, but in line with previous research, this study showed that speaking two languages did not harm thinking skills in autistic children. The thinking skills evaluated in this study included the ability to focus over a period of time, the ability to resist distractions, the ability to move back and forth between tasks, and the ability to use short‐term memory. In fact, speaking two languages might help reduce difficulties that autistic children might face when focusing over a period of time.
