The findings illuminate the importance of effective, two-way communication in providing the mutual understanding needed by therapists to engage parents in the intervention process. The findings also richly describe the engagement strategies used by therapists. Clinical implications include recommendations for strategies for therapists to employ to engage this group of parents. Furthermore, the findings are applicable to service provision in general, as engaging families in a collaborative relationship through attention to their specific situation is a general principle of good quality, family-centered care. Implications for Rehabilitation Effective communication permeates the delivery of culturally sensitive care and provides mutual understanding, which is fundamental to client engagement. The findings illuminate the nature of "partnership" by indicating the role of collaborative therapist strategies in facilitating engagement. Four main strategies facilitate effective communication and client engagement, including understanding the family situation, building a collaborative relationship, tailoring practice to the client's situation and ensuring parents' understanding of therapy procedures. Engaging families in a collaborative relationship through attention to their specific situation is a general principle of good quality, family-centered care.
Ce texte pose les jalons d’une intervention interculturelle auprès d’enfants migrants en situation de handicap et de leurs familles. Il propose une lecture constructiviste des concepts de migration et de handicap, ainsi qu’une réflexion sur les risques d’une approche mettant trop l’accent sur la dimension culturelle et d’une approche régulatrice laissant de côté les spécificités de la migration. Les défis liés à l’accompagnement des familles migrantes et des enfants en situation de handicap sont repérés, de même que les pistes d’action permettant la reconnaissance et la valorisation de leurs diversités. La prise en compte des histoires de migration et la création d’espaces permettant le récit de ces histoires sont thématisées, ainsi que les limites institutionnelles que pose une telle approche et les ressources qu’elle permet de développer.
Background: People with intellectual disabilities who live in residential facilities may need social support to express self determination. Relationships with social care professionals provide an important context for promoting self-determination. Adopting a socioecological perspective, our study aimed to better understand the nature of these relationships. Method: Over a period of ten months, we held 13 focus group discussions with a total of 20 participants, including both residents and staff at facilities for people with intellectual disabilities. Using transcripts of these discussions, we analysed expressions of self-determination among people with intellectual disabilities and the responses of social care professionals. Results: Our results highlight the importance of relational adjustment in fostering self-determination among people with intellectual disabilities and underline the importance of respective roles within relationships between people with intellectual disabilities and social care professionals.
Conclusion:The partnership between people with intellectual disabilities and professionals seems to be the most effective type of relationship in order to support the self-determination of people with intellectual disabilities.This paper provides a fresh perspective on the role played by people with intellectual disabilities in their relationships with social care professionals. By engaging people with intellectual disabilities as partners in fostering self-determination, social care professionals can encourage social participation and feelings of empowerment. Relationships based on partnership offer people with intellectual disabilities a form of hetero-regulation that can help them overcome challenges to behaving in a fully self-determined way. However, partnership also requires changes in professional practices and attitudes.
