Italian network for obesity and cardiovascular disease surveillance: A pilot project

Abstract: Background: Also in Mediterranean countries, which are considered a low risk population for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the increase in body mass index (BMI) has become a public health priority. To evaluate the feasibility of a CVD and obesity surveillance network, forty General Practitioners (GPs) were engaged to perform a screening to assess obesity, cardiovascular risk, lifestyle habits and medication use.

“…First, increasing age was associated with a significantly augmented prevalence of most major cardiovascular risk factors, with the exception of diabetes, probably because of the very limited number of diabetics included in our sample. These results are in accordance with those of previous studies in Italian27,28,30,31,34 and North-American populations 3741. Also, the proportion of subjects treated for arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, or diabetes increased with age, but the chance of being controlled did not display a favorable trend.…”

“…Moreover, comparing our data with previous studies (8,9,20) using direct measurements, almost the same prevalence of obesity and overweight was found. According to previous reports the prevalence of obesity was quite similar between men and women, while the prevalence of overweight was nearly double in men compared with women (7,9) . Recent changes in lifestyle in Western and developing countries, such as physical inactivity and unhealthy eating habits, are likely to account for the increasing prevalence of obesity.…”

“…Few published data are available to characterize current CRF prevalence and to monitor trends in CRF in the Italian population (6)(7)(8)(9) . The aims of the present study were therefore to assess the prevalence of major CRF in a large community-wide sample of the Italian population and to examine potential differences in the distribution of CRF across Italian macro-areas.…”

“…Nonetheless, in the Italian population cheese consumption did not differ by gender (Donfrancesco et al, 2008) and other authors, unlike our results, obtained higher intakes in men than in women (Touvier et al, 2011). Advertising campaigns to promote dairy foods consumption which target women in order to prevent osteoporosis may influence cheese intake in the Basque Country population.…”
