Italy's renewable water resources as estimated on the basis of the monthly water balance

Abstract: The International Programme for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) and the Italian National Committee of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ITAL-ICID) decided it would be worth extending a previous paper on Italy's available water resources to a detailed study on the partitioning of precipitation between evaporation, groundwater storage (saturated and unsaturated zone) and runoff with the aim of estimating the potentially renewable water resources of the country. … Show more

“…The more typical causes incrementing desertification risk included both concentration of population and economic activity in coastal areas as a result of urban growth, internal migration, tourism and intensive agriculture, strictly associated with unsuitable exploitation of water resources, as well as crisis condition in traditional/marginal agriculture systems associated with land abandonment by rural populations and consequent deterioration of soil and water conservation structures especially in sloping areas [4,13,16].…”

“…Over the last 20 years, a decrease in the annual rainfall and a drastic increase in mean temperatures were observed, with important consequences on the evapotranspiration rate and the annual water balance . Contrasting long-term precipitation amounts above 750 mm, in Rome annual precipitation fell below 500 mm four times during the time interval encompassing 1992 and 2007 (Salvati et al 2008a). The most arid period since 1951 was recorded in spring-summer 2003 with no rainfalls and average temperatures being 4°C higher than the respective climatic figure.…”

“…Yet the results from the studies of adoption and the information valuation in this paper show that the value placed on highly localized agronomic information remains particularly strong, and there appears to be a growing demand for local research information. This is likely to reflect an increasing need for information to be well targeted and have high quality characteristics if it is to be influential in adoption decisions [39], considering also relevant spatial constraints and socioeconomic background [40][41][42].…”
