Iterative design of video communication systems

Abstract: This paper reviews the design and implementation of several video telephony systems at Bellcore as a case study in iterative design. In contrast to single user compuer applications, communication systems consists of both the interconnection technology and the people who are interconnected. From a user's point of view, the capabilities provided by the system, the rules for its use, and its reaction to their actions depend jointly on what its developers implemented and how other users behave. This fact has wide-r… Show more

“…Cool et al also discuss the long-term evaluation of a videoconferencing system developed at Bellcore during the 1990's [60]. The system started out as an always-on link between public spaces and evolved into a personal videoconferencing system on personal workstations.…”

“…In their studies of collaboration in London Underground control rooms, Heath and Luff (1992b) observe how peripheral monitoring and the specific public rendering of "private" activities, both of which are based largely on continual auditory access, enable fine-grained interaction and coordination of activities. Other groups have observed that these informal, awareness-based facilities are some of the most useful aspects of media space environments (Olson and Bly, 1991;Fish et al, 1992;Bly et al, 1993); and audio provides a wide range of cues which support this process.…”

“…Our naturalistic approach of evolving Portholes varies from other approaches in several ways (e.g. Cool, Fish, Kraut & Lowery, 1992;Tang & Rua, 1994). First, the system provides a focal point for discussing and experiencing the value of video-based, background awareness.…”

“…Who is in the audience: From the outset of our Portholes development, we considered reciprocity to be an essential element because previous research has suggested that users can monitor and control their self-presentation and behavior (Mantei et al, 1991;Cool et al, 1992;Tang & Rua, 1994). When properly implemented, reciprocity is also a form of feedback (Bellotti & Sellen, 1993).…”
