Japanese experiment of a complete and objective automatic grading system of facial signs from selfie pictures: Validation with dermatologists and characterization of changes due to age and sun exposures

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the capacity of the automatic detection system to accurately grade, from smartphones' selfie pictures, the severity of ten facial signs in Japanese women and their changes due to age and sun exposures. Methods: A three-step approach was conducted, based on self-taken selfie images. At first, to check on 310 Japanese women (18-69 years) enrolled in the northerner Hokkaido area (latitude 43.2°N), how, on ten facial signs, the A.I-based automatic grading system may correlate with dermatologic… Show more

“…[20][21][22][23] This algorithm has been already applied with success to evaluate the sundamage on Japanese panel based on their selfies taken at home. 24 The same approach could provide dynamic evolution of makeup in real life through the day, with selfies taken by consumers when they remove their mask and check their makeup. In addition, miniature captors could provide a better understanding of temperature and humidity within the mask in various conditions, but also the evolution around the eyes to explore the effect to face mask on eye makeup.…”

“…anti-aging product, since being not entirely clinical neither entirely consumer-oriented. As published earlier, 7,8,[17][18][19] the algorithm developed in the system has proven relevance coupled to a high precision in well-defined selfie's pictures.…”

“…The present work aimed at determining the possible accordance between consumer's observations and an objective system based on an A.I algorithm that analyzes the severity of some facial signs performed from selfie images. 7,8,[17][18][19] The latter were taken at D 0 and D 28 , following self-applications for 1 month of an anti-aging taken as the benchmark within this Skincare category.…”

“…In addition, the individual relationship with sun-exposure (sun-phobic or nonsun phobic) plays a crucial role in the development of facial aging, as shown by clinical studies in various countries such as France, 18 China, 19 and Japan. 20,21 Accordingly, as new approach, the AI-based grading system was applied to differentiate the impacts on facial aging by sun-phobic and nonsun-phobic behaviors on 306 differently aged South Africa women living in Pretoria (25.74 • S, 28.22 • E), using images collection and automatic quantification from selfie pictures. The results of this study are the objects of the present paper.…”
