Joint Distribution of Polarization-Multiplexed UWB and WiMAX Radio in PON

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, the feasibility of the joint distribution of ultra-wideband (UWB) and WIMAX wireless using polarization multiplexing as a coexistence technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated within the framework of passive optical networks (PON). Four single-and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing schemes are studied targeting to reduce the mutual interference when UWB and WiMAX are distributed jointly through standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without transmission impairments compensation… Show more

“…For instance, the joint distribution of ultra wideband (UWB) and WiMAX radio signals over PON using single-and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing was proposed in [40]. In this approach, both UWB and WiMAX signals are modulated by an external orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulator, while they are jointly transmitted by means of polarization multiplexing.…”

“…Much research has been targeted toward wireless distribution over passive optical networks (PONs) and various wireless standards including 3G, 3,4 LTE-A, 5 WiFi, [6][7][8] WiMAX, [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] and UWB [16][17][18][19] have been demonstrated overlaying on PON infrastructure. In addition to these wireless standards, a significant amount of work has also been targeted toward millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless signals' distribution.…”

“…To further increase transmission capacity per-wavelength of a fiber-wireless system, polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) is a promising technique since it offers higher spectral efficiency and transmitter uniformity. Therefore the convergence of multiple antenna and PDM-RoF technologies can be greatly advantageous to emerging high speed telecommunication systems with advantages of high spectral efficiency, flexible transmitter/receiver reconfigurability and efficient wireless channel adaptability [4].…”

“…Recently, training symbol based MIMO channel estimation with on-off keying (OOK) modulation is reported [10] and a multi-services PDM-RoF system is also demonstrated [4]. The potential of integrating PDM-RoF and MIMO on the system level, in terms of modulation formats, radio frequency (RF) efficiency and algorithm adaptability of channel estimation, remains unexplored.…”
