“…Similar to findings of cross-ownership in other countries, each of the three South Korean newspapers was found to cover issues related to their own subsidiary cable TV networks more frequently (Cleary and Adams-Bloom, 2009a, 2009b; Lee and Hwang, 2004; Panis et al, 2015) and with a more positive tone (Jung, 2002; Williams, 2002) compared to articles published by the other two newspapers. Specifically, consistent with findings of previous studies (Hardy, 2010; Jung, 2002; Panis et al, 2015), news about programs broadcast by newspaper-owned TV subsidiaries were the most frequent type of self-coverage by all three major newspapers (RQ1).…”

“…The results of this study that examined self-coverage of cross-owned companies in South Korea differ from findings of previous research, conducted mostly in the United States and Europe. First and most importantly, compared to research about examples of self-coverage in the United States and Europe (Cleary and Adams-Bloom, 2009b; Lee and Hwang, 2004; Wood et al, 2004), issues of self-promotion of subsidiary TV networks by South Korea’s leading newspapers appear to be more serious. For example, this study found that articles published by South Korean news organizations with TV subsidiaries are not only more favorable toward themselves but also seldom report news about their competitors.…”

“…For instance, “newspapers owned by corporate shareholder controlled companies and large chains are more likely to offer coverage with a negative tone” than their privately owned counterparts (Dunaway, 2013, p. 35). In addition, Time magazine was found to cover Time Warner entertainment products more often after the merger of these two companies (Lee & Hwang, 2004). Furthermore, Fox News, generally considered a “red” or conservative media outlet, takes a conservative stand in its coverage of global warming by treating this subject as bogus and insubstantial (Fedlman, Maibach, Roser-Renouf, & Leiserowitz, 2012).…”
