Judgments of the duration of visually marked empty time intervals: Linking perceived duration and sensitivity

Abstract: The capability of subjects to categorize (as short or long) visually marked empty time intervals was investigated in three experiments. Two visual signals, located 18°to the left (L) and to the right (R) of a fixation point in the visual field, established four marking conditions, two unilaterally presented (L-L and R-R) and two bilaterally presented (L-R and R-L). In Experiments 1 and 2, the results show that discrimination is better with unilateral sequences than with bilateral sequences and that the perceiv… Show more

“…The psychometric function is again given by Equation (5), except that S mp is a free parameter that captures the arbitrary criterion used by observers. In yet a further variant, observers receive feedback relative to the objective midpoint of the range of test durations (Grondin, 1998), which should help them to set a stable criterion.…”

“…This is not compatible with the left-hemisphere hypothesis for temporal processing, but it does comply with the hypothesis of an internal mechanism that scans visual information in a left-right order (64) . In Grondin (61) , it was also shown that discrimination is better with unilateral sequences than with bilateral ones.…”

“…In other words, the overall level of temporal performance is not independent of the quality of a sensory impression (fovea vs. periphery). Indeed, overall discrimination is better for 250-ms empty intervals when both visual markers are presented at fovea than it is in the periphery conditions (61) . Future research on lateral effects in visual temporal processing should focus on rhythmic effects, i.e.…”

“…1A and B). This interpretation assumes that participants employed the same response criterion for all conditions and that the differences in the distributions of Blong^and Bshortr esponses depend only on the perceived duration in each condition (Grondin, 1998(Grondin, , 2008. Measuring temporal sensitivity (or level of duration discrimination), the other dependent variable in the present study, entailed estimating of the standard deviation of the psychometric function (Fig.…”
