K Transfer during Burial Diagenesis in the Mahakam Delta Basin (Kalimantan, Indonesia)

Abstract: Abstract--Progressively buried sandstones and shales of the Mahakam Delta Basin in Indonesia were studied. Mineralogical, morphological and K-Ar isotopic data were obtained for clay, mica and feldspar minerals. The data indicate that K necessary for the illitization of illite/smectite mixed-layer minerals was supplied mainly from K-feldspar alteration within the sandstones and from mica within the shales. Most of the K-feldspar alteration for both the shale and sandstone samples were observed outside the main … Show more

“…This suggests that K may be considered highly mobile in fine-grained illitization systems at the basinal scale (e.g., Furlan et al, 1996) --more so than Al, which is redistributed through isomorphic substitution and limited to exchange between primary and secondary mineral phases. Given these relationships, if source composition is known or can be inferred, a predicted "pre-metamorphic" weathering trend can be calculated.…”

“…1976), an increasing number of studies suggest that the illitization of smectite in mudrocks may occur in an open system in which an external source of K + , such as interbedded sandstones, is required (e.g. Furlan et al . 1996; Land et al .…”

“…In this case, the K + /H + activity ratio continues to increase and a chemical gradient exists from fault to more distant zones, where illitic minerals precipitate from kaolin precursors. Similarly, Furlan et al (1996) describe a more intense kaolin illitization further away from underlying shale formation in the Mahakam Delta Basin (Indonesia). Feldspar dissolution, and subsequent kaolin precipitation, prevails in the deeper part, closer to the source rock.…”
