Karyomorphometric analysis of Fritillaria montana group in Greece

Abstract: Fritillaria Linnaeus, 1753 (Liliaceae) is a genus of geophytes, represented in Greece by 29 taxa. Most of the Greek species are endemic to the country and/or threatened. Although their classical cytotaxonomic studies have already been presented, no karyomorphometric analysis has ever been given. In the present study, the cytological results of Fritillaria montana Hoppe ex W.D.J. Koch, 1832 group, which includes Fritillaria epirotica Turrill ex Rix, 1975 and Fritillaria montana are statistically evaluated for t… Show more

“…Fritillaria consists of approximately 160–170 species distributed in the Northern Hemisphere (Tekşen 2018, Rix 2019, Samaropoulou et al 2020, Eker and Tekşen 2023). Three diversity centres of the genus stand out: California (21 species, 1 variety), China (24 species, 2 varieties), and SW Asia – E Mediterranean, mainly Turkey (48 species), Greece (26 species, 5 subspecies), and Iran (18 species, 1 variety, 3 subspecies) (Losina‐Losinskaya 1968, Kamari 1991, Xinqi and Mordak 2000, Hill 2014, Advay et al 2015, Sharifi‐Tehrani and Advay 2015, Samaropoulou et al 2016, 2020, 2022, Peruzzi 2016, Kamari et al 2017, Kiani et al 2017, Tekşen 2018, Yıldırım and Tekşen 2021, Advay et al 2022, Eker and Tekşen 2023). The high species and endemic species richness of Fritillaria in Turkey, as well as the representation of three subgenera ( Fritillaria , Petilium (Ludw.)…”

“…Turkey is is the country with the highest number of species and endemic species of Fritillaria in the world (Tekşen 2018, Sonay et al 2023). In the distribution of the genus, three regions with a significant degree of diversity stand out: California (21 species, 1 variety), China (24 species, 2 varieties), and SW Asia–E Mediterranean, mainly Turkey (50 species), Greece (26 species, 5 subspecies), and Iran (22 species, 1 variety, 3 subspecies) (Losina‐Losinskaya 1968, Kamari 1991, Xinqi and Mordak 2000, Hill 2014, Advay et al 2015, Sharifi‐Tehrani and Advay 2015, Samaropoulou et al 2016, 2020, 2022, Peruzzi 2016, Kamari et al 2017, Kiani et al 2017, Tekşen 2018, 2023, Yıldırım and Tekşen 2021, Advay et al 2022, Advay and Tekşen 2023, Eker and Balos 2023, Eker and Tekşen 2023, Sonay et al 2023). The most significant taxonomic studies on Fritillaria species in Turkey were provided by Rix (1984) and Tekşen (2012, 2012).…”
