Karyotype Analysis of Twelve Species belonging to Genus Vigna.

Abstract: Summary Cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., is an important crop for many developing countries. Its potential cannot be fully achieved due to scarse resistance to pathogens. Source of resistance are present in wild gene pool, therefore, the introduction of genes for valuable traits from wild species to Vigna unguiculata faced an obstacle due to crossability barriers between species. The study of the chromosomal morphology could be useful in a modern plant breeding approach of cowpea.Recently the use of image… Show more

“…The values of symmetry indices (TF%, Syi and Rec) and their elaboration can offer insights into the chromosome evolution, indicating the level of asymmetry. As far as karyotype parameters are concerned, our method allows an accurate determination of the karyomorphological indices which can be considered to be directly correlated with the evolution of karyotype as reported for Cicer (Venora et al 1995), Vigna (Venora et al 1998) and many species of Vicia (Kotseruba et al 2000;Ruffini Castiglione et al 2009, 2010, andreferences therein).…”

“…The availability of such precise measures allows the determination of some indexes that are considered to be directly correlated with the evolution of the karyotype. The results confirm the number of chromosome (2n 5 28), previously determinated by Garbari (1973), as well as a detailed karyomorphometry and a defined symmetry category, according to Stebbins; we also have determined the indexes of symmetry (TF%, SYI, and REC), essential for the evaluation of the evolutionary direction of the karyotype: these values range theoretically from 0 to 100 for REC and SYI and from 0 to 50 for TF%, therefore a karyotype with high values of these indices is considered less evolved (Venora et al, 1999). We describe a simple technique for direct visualization of plant chromosomes by means of AFM.…”
